Instead the majority of tracks are stuck in limbo, sounding like what I would term "enlightened noodlings". 3 1/2Metheny/Mehldau is symptomatic of when many of a genre's finest players get together and try to have a session under one unified vision. Obviously the talent is clearly there, as we are treated to a plethora of stimulating guitar and piano dueling, but we rarely hear these two giants effectively combine, such as in the rare upbeat, percussion-guided "Ring of Life".
Unfortunately, the only thing that happened is I discovered where dentists and doctors get their piped in waiting room music. I even listened to it more than once (more than twice) to see if maybe I started to "get" it or it grew on me. I tried to believe that Mehldau would balance out the guitar and I would actually enjoy this CD.
I really do. So, I tried not to think too hard about what was in store for me. I like Brad Mehldau.
I tried to believe that as a jazz musician, I would be able to learn from this music. Some people may like this album, but it is definitely not my cup of hot mocha. And I kind of like Pat Metheny.
But I have never been a big huge fan of jazz guitar, and unfortunatley, that's what Pat plays.
I wish they had maybe taken more time to rehearse the tunes, make some arrangements with some s p a c e between the notes. On the other hand, it's a bit lifeless, sounds at times like over-busy noodling by each musician as they ignore each other, or try to top each other, only both at once. Hmmm.I dunno about this one. True, it does sound like the classic Jim Hall/Bill Evans disc, as some point out.
I feel cheated. I would gladly return it. As this CD has some trick that makes it impossible for a PC CD reader to work, it has been impossible to load this CD into my iTunes. I couldn't read any warning about this trick on the CD cover.
Is an incredible cd, I recomend 100% that you must have this one in your collection
